Frequently Asked Questions About Photo-Facial Treatments

Sun damage, dark or light spots, visible veins, redness, bumps, and discolouration are common signs of premature aging. But they don’t have to be permanent. Intense pulse light (IPL) photo-facial treatments are a simple way to minimize the appearance of these common signs of premature aging without the surgery.

Laser Genesis photo-facial treatments use IPL technology to help patients achieve a noticeably clearer, brighter, and younger-looking complexion. Here are some answers to commonly asked questions about photo-facial treatments.

Who is the best candidate for this treatment?

The best candidate for photo-facial treatments is someone with uneven complexion and skin texture concerns, including discolouration, sun spots, café-au-lait spots, port wine stains, rosacea, and visible veins on their skin.

However, it should be noted that for safety reasons, an individual may not be an ideal candidate if they have any of the following:

  • Metal or other implants in the treatment area

  • A current diagnosis or history of cancer

  • Are pregnant or nursing

  • A disease or condition that can be stimulated by light, such as epilepsy

  • A history of a disease or condition that can be stimulated by heat, such as herpes

  • Poorly-controlled endocrine disorders, such as diabetes or polycystic ovary syndrome

  • Any active skin condition in the treatment area, such eczema, psoriasis, or a rash

  • A history of skin disorders, keloids, unusual wound healing, or excessively dry and/or sensitive skin

  • Any surgical procedures within the past three months

  • A tattoo or permanent makeup in the treatment area

  • Excessively tanned skin

How long does the treatment take?

Each session typically takes just 15–20 minutes, making it easy to fit into a busy schedule or a short lunch break. You may apply makeup and go about your regular activities immediately following treatment. For best results, book each appointment with some space between any treatments or activities that require direct contact with skin in the treatment area for 48 hours following each treatment.

Are photo-facial treatments safe for darker skin tones?

A lot of treatments are safe for darker skin tones. However, to determine if an individual may be at risk of discolouration, it’s best to consult directly with a certified treatment technician.

What do the IPL treatments feel like?

Patients describe photo-facial treatments as feeling like a light snap or flick on the skin. The sensation is very brief, as the applicator moves around the treatment area. The applicator’s built-in cooling feature prevents hot spots, making the treatments more comfortable than other treatment options, particularly in sensitive areas like the upper lip.

How many IPL sessions are needed to see results? Are they permanent?

Most patients see the best results after four or five treatments, each spaced three weeks apart. You may see considerable improvement after the first session. However, the exact number of treatments depends on the individual and the treatment area. A certified treatment provider will be able to outline the best treatment plan based on each patient’s individual needs. How long results are maintained also varies from patient to patient and is dependent on how the skin reacts to the treatment and the level of skin care post-procedure. For example, results will last longer if skin is protected from the sun daily. In most cases, one touch-up session is recommended approximately every three to six months, depending on the skin’s response to the treatment.

Is there any specific pre or post procedure care required?

Ensure the treatment area is clean prior to each appointment. Do not apply lotions, creams, powders, or makeup before each treatment session, and stop using any products that might irritate skin two to three days prior to treatment. Avoid tanning, including with self-tanners, two weeks before and two weeks after treatment, and use sunscreen and sun protection (like layers and hats) whenever going outdoors—even in cloudy weather. If possible, patients should have their complete medical history available in case it is required by the treatment provider.

Following treatments, skin may feel warm, like a sunburn, and may remain red for up to 24 hours. Makeup may be applied to neutralize redness immediately following treatment, though it is recommended to apply sunscreen first. Hot baths, massages, or other activities requiring direct skin contact should be avoided for the first two days post-treatment. Be sure to follow instructions for before and after each treatment as outlined by the treatment provider.
